Japan’s foreign ministry officials say the country’s embassy in Yemen was closed as security conditions there have deteriorated after the takeover of the country by an anti-government Shia militant group.
A group of Shia insurgents, called Houthis, took control of the capital Sanaa on February 6th, leading to the collapse of the government.
Japanese government officials say 5 staffers, including the ambassador, were evacuated from the country on Sunday and the embassy was temporarily closed. Some diplomats will possibly continue to work in Japan’s embassy in Doha in Qatar.
Japan’s foreign ministry had already issued an evacuation and travel advisory for all of Yemen.
The advisory is the ministry’s highest level and was issued because there have been frequent abductions and attacks against foreigners in Yemen.
